Chapter Four

Kyndra

Madison wouldn’t let me answer the door when Jaiden arrived. I tried, but the man was stubborn. Auntie insisted that since it was part of his job, I was the one being stubborn and willful, but she was my guest, after all. But, I was right there when she got there, so I saw her take in the foyer and Madison and all the little nicknacks and such Auntie has around the place. Personally, I love the house, but then, after living how I did before I moved in with her, living in a pup tent would be better. It wasn’t the house itself, don’t get me wrong. My bio-monsters are Summers too, so they have the same kind of money Auntie does. Well, close. She manages hers better. But the home I grew up in was cold, and I’m positive the walls and floors have absorbed the hate and hurt my parents spew and surround themselves with all the time. It’s a showhouse of wealth, but one that has no warmth, love, joy, or happiness anywhere inside it. Ever.

Still, I didn’t want my last name or the wealth I came from to be a problem. I mean, yes, I had a trust—two of them actually—and wouldn’t ever really have to worry, but I still had goals and would work and such. Besides, I knew her family wasn't poor. She might work hard, but she always had the best stuff, and they had a nice sized home and all too.

“Jaiden? Hey.”

“Hi, Kyndra,” Jaiden said, her voice soft and her cheeks slightly pink.

She’d dressed up a bit, though, thankfully, not fancy. A series of leather and metal bracelets on her left wrist, a choker—also leather—with a tiny glass heart, a sea-foam green button up lace top, untucked, with the sleeves cuffed to just below the elbow, and a pair of slate gray dress pants. And her black and white Chucks on her feet. I couldn’t help but smile at the shoes. I knew she had others, I’d seen many she could have chosen from. These were the ones she’d been wearing non-stop for the last month or so, though, so I’d half expected them. No clue why, but it I liked seeing the bracelets and shoes mixed in with the dressier clothes.

“Come on. Let’s not stand around here. Madison hates when people do that. Besides, the foyer is a weird place to hang out.”

Jaiden chuckled and nodded. “True. So, where we going?”

“My room,” I said as I took her hand and tugged her down the hall and up the stairs.

I stopped at the door to my room and stared at it, unsure what to do next. I wanted to just hang out some, but I wanted to ask Jaiden on a real date too. Would she think that odd once we were inside? If I asked before we’d had a chance to get to know each other more first? Dammit, I should have planned this better.

“What’s wrong, Kyndra?”

“Nothing, just....”

“Just what?”

“Um....”
